The five-strap design refers to the standard five-point harness configuration: two shoulder straps, two waist straps, and a central crotch strap, which together distribute restraint force across the body rather than concentrating it at a single point, reducing the risk of a child sliding or slipping out.
The relevant safety standard
The harness fitted as standard to a pushchair is not assessed under a separate standard of its own: it forms part of the pushchair’s overall safety assessment under BS EN 1888, the British and European standard covering pushchairs and prams, which includes requirements for the integral restraint system alongside the frame, wheels, folding mechanisms and stability. BS EN 13210 is a different standard, covering standalone children’s harnesses, reins and similar restraint articles sold separately — for example, an additional safety harness or walking reins attached via the D-rings many pushchairs provide for that purpose — rather than the harness the pushchair is originally supplied with.
Why non-reclining seats matter for younger babies

Testing that all five points actually fasten securely, and that the buckle mechanism engages firmly rather than feeling loose or worn, is worth doing as a specific, deliberate check when buying second-hand, separately from checking the pushchair’s frame and wheels for general condition.
