Car seat expiry dates get talked about as if they are a legal requirement, similar to an MOT, but that is not accurate in the UK. Understanding what a “service life” date actually represents, and why manufacturers set one at all, makes it easier to judge a specific seat on its actual condition rather than either ignoring the date entirely or treating it as a hard legal cut-off it is not.

There Is No Legal Expiry Date in the UK

Car seats sold in the UK do not carry an official, legally mandated expiry date. There is no law preventing a car seat from being used beyond a specific time period. What manufacturers do provide instead is a recommended “service life” — effectively their own guidance on how long the seat should reasonably be expected to perform as designed, printed on the seat itself, typically on a label on the base or frame.

Why Manufacturers Set a Service Life At All

The recommendation exists because of plastic degradation, not because the seat suddenly stops working on a specific date. Car seats are made largely from petroleum-based plastics, chosen because they combine strength with relatively low weight for a component that has to absorb crash forces. Those same plastics are subject to gradual degradation from environmental exposure — heat, cold, sunlight and humidity all affect plastic over time, and a car seat spends its working life inside a car, an environment that swings between genuinely extreme temperatures: well below freezing in winter, and well over 60°C in a car left in direct summer sun. Repeated exposure to that range of temperature extremes, over years, can make plastic components more brittle than they were when new, which matters specifically because a car seat’s ability to protect a child in a crash depends on those plastic components performing exactly as designed under sudden, high force.

What the Typical Service Life Actually Looks Like

Service life recommendations vary by manufacturer and specific model, but commonly fall somewhere between five and ten years from the date of manufacture, with many seats specifying somewhere around six to seven years. This variation is itself informative: it confirms the figure is a manufacturer-specific engineering judgement about their own materials and design, not a fixed, universal safety threshold that applies identically to every seat on the market. Checking the specific service life printed on a specific seat, rather than assuming a generic figure applies, is the accurate way to know what that particular seat’s manufacturer actually recommends.

What Actually Ends a Car Seat’s Useful Life Sooner

The service life date is not the only, or even the most common, reason a car seat stops being usable. A seat is also considered to have reached the end of its useful life when:

  • Your child exceeds its height or weight limits, which for a fast-growing child often happens well before any service life date is reached.
  • It has sustained damage, including from a crash — even a seemingly minor one. A car seat’s protective structure can be compromised in ways that are not visible from the outside, which is why safety guidance is generally firm that a seat involved in any collision should be replaced rather than visually inspected and kept in use.
  • It no longer meets current safety regulations, since safety standards themselves are periodically updated, and an older seat that met the requirements in force when it was made does not automatically get upgraded to meet later standards.

Practical Guidance

Check the specific service life date printed on any seat you are buying second-hand or have had in storage for a long period, rather than assuming a seat is fine simply because it looks physically intact — plastic degradation from heat and UV exposure is not always visible to the eye. Combine that check with the size and weight limits for your specific child, and treat any seat with an unknown or uncertain history — particularly regarding whether it has ever been in a crash — with real caution, since that specific risk is not something a visual inspection alone can reliably rule out.
