Most pushchair comparisons on this site are about hardware — tandem versus side-by-side, air-filled versus foam wheels, all-terrain versus city frames. Seat orientation is different: it’s the one buying decision with an actual piece of academic research behind it, carried out by a developmental psychologist at the University of Dundee, and it’s worth understanding what that research did and didn’t find before treating “parent-facing is better” as a settled fact.
The Research Behind the Claim
The study most often cited in this debate was led by Dr Suzanne Zeedyk, a developmental psychologist in the University of Dundee’s School of Psychology. It combined a large observational study of parent-infant pairs with a smaller, controlled experiment: twenty babies were wheeled across a one-mile route through Dundee city centre, with half the journey spent in an away-facing (forward-facing) pushchair and half in a toward-facing (parent-facing) pushchair, allowing each baby to act as their own comparison across both orientations on the same trip.
The headline finding, reported by the Sutton Trust in coverage of the study, was about communication: in the observational study of 2,722 parent-infant pairs, parents were roughly twice as likely to be talking to their baby in a face-to-face buggy (25% of pairs observed) compared with a forward-facing one (11%). In the smaller Dundee experiment, infant laughter followed a similar pattern — only one of the twenty babies laughed during the away-facing portion of the route, compared with half of them during the toward-facing portion. The Sutton Trust’s coverage describes this as the first study of its kind to look specifically at the psychological effects of pushchair orientation on parent-child interaction, framing modern forward-facing buggy use as a potentially “emotionally isolated and language poor” environment for very young children compared with face-to-face orientation.
What the Study Found on Stress
The Dundee experiment also tracked physiological measures — heart rate and whether babies fell asleep — as indirect indicators of stress. Average heart rates were lower when babies were positioned toward-facing, and babies were roughly twice as likely to fall asleep in that orientation (52%, compared with 27% away-facing), which the study’s authors interpreted as suggesting reduced stress levels in the face-to-face position.
Why This Distinction Matters for Buying a Pushchair
It’s tempting to compress research like this into a simple buying rule — “parent-facing is better for development” — and on the specific measures this study looked at (parental talk, infant laughter, heart rate, sleep during the journey), the results do point consistently in favour of face-to-face orientation. What’s worth keeping in proportion is the scale of the experimental component: the physiological findings rest on an experiment involving twenty babies on a single one-mile route, which is a genuinely small sample for drawing firm conclusions about infant development generally, even though the much larger observational study (2,722 pairs) supports the interaction findings more robustly. Treating the result as “interaction increases with face-to-face seating, on solid evidence” is well supported; treating it as a definitively settled verdict on long-term infant stress or development from a twenty-baby experiment is a bigger claim than the study alone can carry.
The Practical Trade-Offs Beyond the Research
Setting the psychological research aside, there are practical differences between the two orientations worth weighing on their own terms. Parent-facing seats let a caregiver see a baby’s face directly — useful for spotting distress, checking a dropped dummy, or simply for the interaction the Dundee research highlights — but they typically add bulk and weight to a pushchair frame, since the mechanism has to support a reversible or dual-facing seat unit rather than a single fixed orientation. Forward-facing seats tend to be lighter and often give a slightly better view for a toddler who’s old enough to be genuinely interested in looking around rather than at a parent’s face, which is part of why many travel systems switch a child from parent-facing to forward-facing as they move from newborn to toddler.
Many mid-range and premium pushchairs now offer a reversible seat unit specifically so this isn’t a binary, once-only decision — a caregiver can run parent-facing for the newborn stage and switch to forward-facing later as a child’s interests and needs change, without buying an entirely new pushchair.
A Reasonable Way to Weigh It
Given what the research does and doesn’t establish, the honest summary is this: face-to-face seating measurably increases how much parents talk to their babies and how often babies laugh, based on a fairly robust observational sample of 2,722 pairs. The physiological “less stress” interpretation rests on a much smaller twenty-baby experiment, and is reasonably well supported by that data but shouldn’t be treated as the final word on infant development generally. A reversible seat unit, where a budget allows for one, sidesteps the need to fully resolve the debate by keeping both options available as a child’s needs change over their first year or two.
