Wheel type is one of the specifications that gets a single line in most pushchair listings, but it has a real, ongoing effect on how the pushchair actually behaves and how much maintenance it needs. The two main options — air-filled (pneumatic) and foam-filled — each solve a different problem, and the right choice depends more on your typical terrain and tolerance for maintenance than on which one is generally considered “better.”

Air-Filled (Pneumatic) Wheels

Air-filled wheels work the same way a bicycle tyre does, and they remain the most comfortable option for uneven surfaces or genuine all-terrain use — the air cushions bumps, kerbs and uneven ground in a way a solid material cannot fully replicate. This is why most dedicated all-terrain pushchairs use air-filled tyres as standard.

The trade-off is maintenance and puncture risk. Air-filled tyres can go flat from a slow pressure loss over time or from an actual puncture caused by sharp debris such as glass or grit. This means periodically checking and topping up tyre pressure, and it is worth keeping a basic repair kit, a spare inner tube and a pump on hand if you use air-filled wheels regularly, rather than discovering a flat tyre only when you are out and need the pushchair to work.

Foam-Filled Wheels

Foam-filled wheels are built to deliver a similar ride quality to air-filled tyres — a comparable level of grip and comfort over uneven ground — without the puncture risk, because there is no air chamber that can lose pressure or be punctured. For anyone who wants the ride benefits of a pneumatic-style tyre without the ongoing maintenance, foam-filled wheels are a genuine middle-ground option, not simply a lesser substitute.

Weight is where the comparison gets less consistent between manufacturers, because “foam-filled” covers more than one actual construction. Some foam-filled and gel-filled wheels are noticeably heavier than an equivalent air-filled wheel, while lightweight EVA foam wheels — a different, denser foam construction used mainly on compact urban strollers — can actually be lighter than an air-filled tyre and rim assembly. The practical takeaway is not to assume a fixed weight rule either way, but to check the actual weight specification of the specific model you are comparing, since “foam-filled” alone does not tell you which side of that range a given pushchair falls on.

Solid Wheels

A third option, most common on lightweight and budget strollers rather than dedicated all-terrain models, is fully solid plastic or rubber wheels with no cushioning material at all. These are the lowest-maintenance option and the least expensive to manufacture, which is part of why they appear more often on compact, budget-focused pushchairs, but they transmit the most vibration and bump impact directly through to the frame and handle, making them the least comfortable option on anything other than smooth, even pavement.

Matching Wheel Type to How You Actually Use the Pushchair

  • Mostly smooth pavements and shopping centres, and you want the lightest, lowest-maintenance option: solid or foam-filled wheels are a reasonable fit, with foam-filled the better choice if you occasionally hit uneven ground.
  • Regular use on parks, gravel paths or uneven ground, and ride comfort matters: air-filled wheels give the best cushioning, provided you are willing to check pressure periodically and keep basic repair kit on hand.
  • You want most of the comfort benefit of air-filled tyres without puncture risk, and don’t mind slightly more weight: foam-filled wheels are specifically designed to sit in this middle ground.

A Practical Middle Option

Some parents address the puncture risk on air-filled tyres directly, rather than switching wheel type entirely, by using a sealant product (commonly referred to as tyre “slime”) injected into the tyre, which can seal small punctures from the inside as they happen. This keeps the ride quality of air-filled tyres while reducing, though not eliminating, the practical disruption of a puncture — worth considering if you have already bought a pushchair with air-filled wheels and are finding punctures a recurring issue rather than a rare event.
