In November 2009, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled roughly one million Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers — including the Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport and several other model lines sold between 1999 and 2009 — after the CPSC found the stroller’s hinge mechanism posed a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard during unfolding and opening. Compliance with that standard covers structural and mechanical safety requirements that fold mechanisms fall under, which is one practical reason secondhand pushchairs without a visible standard reference, or with a hinge mechanism that feels loose, sticky or inconsistent when tested by hand, are worth treating with real caution rather than assuming any working fold action is a safe one.
Testing the fold mechanism by hand — away from a child, checking that it locks firmly and doesn’t catch or bind unpredictably partway through — before the pushchair goes into regular use is a small step that directly addresses the exact hazard RoSPA’s guidance is warning about, rather than only discovering a stiff or unpredictable hinge the first time it’s folded with a toddler standing close by.
